Illinois
Related: About this forumIL. Primary: What happens if you vote for one candidate but another candidate's pledged delegates?
For instance, you vote for Biden himself but you also vote for Warren's 5 delegates instead of Biden's.
I didn't do that today, but I've wondered for some time what that does to the delegate tally.
I asked on an 'Illinois for Warren' board but no one could come up with a confident answer.
Thanks.

(3,391 posts)I was thinking of doing the same as I was originally a Warren supporter.

(19,847 posts)I almost missed that on the Metropolitan Water Rec District myself (I'd only marked one on the sample ballot)

(18,402 posts)And there were no answers, just misunderstanding the question because most states dont vote separately for delegates, or saying that wouldnt happen (I bet it does).
Still want to know.
Just asked spouse, who said he wasnt sure but thinks the delegate votes would override presidential one. Youre sending them to the convention. He could be right, or not!

I voted for 6, the maximum.

(19,847 posts)And if I'd voted for Biden but picked Bernie's 5 candidates (assuming he rides it to the end) that seems like an even messier problem. If Biden won ILL by a hair's breadth but a few people did what I described and Bernie's delegates got slightly more votes than Bernie himself did...

(42,649 posts)My guess is that the hope is that a voter will pick a candidate and also that candidate's pledged delegates.

(4,488 posts)The winner of the statewide race wins a certain percentage of the delegates. I don't know that number for Illinois.
Then, if you vote for another candidates' listed delegates they can, if they win the most votes, become a delegate for said candidate. So if it said to vote for 8 delegates and you voted for only for 5 because those 5 were the only Warren delegates listed, then if those 5 are in the top 8 for total votes, they will go to the convention as Warren delegates. These delegates are voted on in each respective congressional district. Also, if it told you to vote for 8 and their were only 5 for Warren listed, that means that the Warren campaign was only able to recruit 5 people to run for delegate in that particular congressional district. This would mean that 3 delegates from other candidates would be in the top 8 and go to the convention.
It's slightly complicated. I hope I helped.
