LGBTQ couples would get fertility coverage under Illinois bill headed to governor's desk. 'Yes, you

It’s an experience fewer LGBTQ people may soon face because of a bill that recently passed both houses of the state legislature. The bill would require many health insurance companies in Illinois to extend fertility coverage to LGBTQ people, single people and women with certain health issues, without making them first try on their own for a year. It would also require health insurers to cover infertility treatments for women older than 35, who don’t have those barriers to conception, after six months of trying rather than 12 months.

The bill must be signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker to become law. Spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh would not say whether Pritzker will sign the bill but she said, “He looks forward to reviewing it.”

If it becomes law, the requirements will apply to about 20% of insurance plans in the state, said bill sponsor Rep. Margaret Croke, D-Chicago. Illinois laws regulating health insurance do not apply to certain types of plans, such as those based in other states and self-funded plans, which are a type of insurance often offered by large employers.

The bill passed the House 68-43 and the Senate 49-6. Some legislators expressed concerns about the measure during a House floor debate in April.
