518 Illinois residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated. Most had underlying conditions, state data shows.
But experts say the chances of getting a so-called breakthrough infection remain very low. In all, about 5.9 million Illinois residents are fully vaccinated.
Right now, they are still very rare, Dr. Ramon Lorenzo-Redondo, a COVID-19 scientist and researcher at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said of breakthrough infections. Even with the new delta variants, the protection rate offered by vaccines continues to be high, he said.
Of the 518 people who had been hospitalized as of Wednesday, 33% had diabetes, 22% had chronic kidney disease, 22% had immunocompromised conditions, 4% had autoimmune diseases and 3% had chronic liver disease, according data that had not been released by the state health department before this week.
The bulk of the patients 83% were age 60 and older. Just over 70% of the patients were white and 17% were Black.

(31,004 posts)A better number (although still imperfect) would be how many of those who vaccinated people who tested positive had to be hospitalized.

(19,322 posts)you'll never see this guy out in public without a mask on. I don't care what people think. When I go out in public and see everyone pretending this pandemic is finished, I feel sorry for them. It isn't, and this fall and winter will demonstrate how wrong they are.

I am currently using a combination of 3 ply cotton mask and surgical mask. Am awaiting delivery on 3M N95 masks that I ordered on Tuesday.

(24,625 posts)3M N95, model #9010.
I did some background lookups on N95 masks in general. The 3M ones are ok. There are other 3M models of N95, but this one had the best deal on price. Another DUer recommended them to me.

(24,625 posts)about how they're working out?
They don't have ear loops. There are two stretchy bands that go behind the head, one near the nape of the neck and the other higher up, just below the top of the head. That gives a good seal on the face, with zero gaps.
After I get the upper band in place, I lift some of my hair up from under the band to let it fall over it. Looks better on me that way. Or, I can let both bands rest at the nape and pull the upper one up to loop over the ears on both sides. On my face, it still gives a sealed fit that way, without any gaps, but I don't know if they would work that way on other faces. The fit is very snug.
They are more breathable than double masking, and very comfortable. The front sticks out firmly and reminds me of a bird beak so that the edges are the only place where it touches the face. There is a metal band at the bridge of the nose to bend for a close fit there.
It is so lightweight and thin that you might wonder how it protects you, but it actually has 5 thin layers of nonwoven, fused substances designed to filter out particles. That's two more layers than a surgical mask and with a sealed fit that surgical masks don't have.
It comes with each mask in its own sealed plastic wrap so that you can carry it with you in a purse or pocket.
