Referendum on ranked-choice voting in Illinois

Voters in Peoria Township will make their voices heard on whether or not the state of Illinois should opt for ranked-choice voting in future elections.

A non-binding referendum will be on the Nov. 5 ballot asking voters if the state should use the system, which is designed to prevent spoilers and allow a more accurate representation of voters' preferences.

The question on the ballot in Peoria Township – approved at their April 9 meeting – asks the opinion of the voters and is non-binding.

The text says: "Should the State of Illinois adopt ranked-choice voting—a system which gives voters the opportunity to rank multiple choices in a process that ensures the winner has gained approval by the majority of voters, allows voters to vote their true preference, gets rid of the “spoiler effect” and encourages more positive campaigning—for statewide and federal elections?"
