Adams athletic director accuses South Bend schools of racial discrimination
SOUTH BEND — Bill Groves, a longtime high school athletic director and coach, has filed a federal complaint against the South Bend Community School Corp., alleging administrators and the school board discriminated against him last year when they hired Seabe Gavin as the athletic director for the district.
Gavin has far less coaching, teaching and administrative experience, and lacks a master’s degree, the complaint states. Groves, who has been athletic director at Adams High School for a decade, alleges the school corporation made the hire based on race rather than merit.
“I’ve always thought of myself as a South Bend guy. I’m very disappointed in the leadership of the school corporation and the way they’ve handled this,” Groves said in an interview Friday.
He is white. Gavin is African-American.
