Indiana budget: 7 takeaways from the Senate's spending plan

Indiana Senate Republicans presented their version of the state budget Thursday, proposing to spend $34.6 billion over two years.

It includes sizable increase for schools — but nothing specific for teacher pay — and looks to solve the funding issues at the Department of Child Services.

The proposal also addresses projected Medicaid needs and, in keeping with the governor’s blueprint, cuts money for a train that runs from Indianapolis to Chicago and adds the Senate’s say about the governor’s desire to dip into $1 billion to pay for a variety of transportation projects.

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the budget along party lines Thursday, and the full Senate will vote next week. A House-Senate committee will negotiate a final version before the session ends later this month.
