INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indianas attorney general submitted a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that it should reverse a federal appeals courts ruling that allowed both members of same-sex couples in Indiana to be listed as parents on the birth certificates of their children.
The petition from Attorney General Curtis Hill follows a January decision by the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals that affirmed a decision by judges in Indianas federal southern district court who found that Indiana laws limiting who can be called the parent of a child were unconstitutional.
Hill filed also filed a request in June asking the court to review the appellate courts decision.
The original case involved Ashlee and Ruby Henderson, a gay married couple from Lafayette who filed a federal lawsuit in 2015 challenging Indianas birth records law. (18,856 posts)If it is state law, change it. States focus on such strange things. It hurts nobody to have two names on a birth certificate.

(14,337 posts)Needs to change. My Grandson's BC from NY two years ago lists both my Daughter and DIL's names on his. Actually, NY lists the names as Parent #1 and Parent #2. When I had to request another official one for my Social Security, my BC says the same.
Great idea! This is what all states should do now.
