'If we don't do it now ... this is never going to happen': Senators advance mental health tax cut

There’s still no agreement between the House and Senate on taxes as both chambers advance mismatched proposals.

The Senate held a meeting Monday about Senate File 1276, the tax “compromise” proposed last week by Gov. Kim Reynolds. The House has not agreed to the proposal.

Sen. Dan Dawson, R-Council Bluffs, said Reynolds’ plan was “the best idea of all three parties in this equation: the Senate, the House and the governor’s office.” The proposal would accelerate tax cuts, phase out the property tax “backfill” and fund the state’s mental health services through a state appropriation.

Reynolds said last week the proposal would result in a $400 million tax cut for Iowans.

Let me guess...with state revenue predicting to fall, we will cut said revenue by giving tax cut (probably aimed at mega donors and megapigfarms). Then with less money to spend and a mandatory balanced budget the Republican will somehow claim that they will increase spending on mental health. Not buying it.

This will almost certainly cause cuts in funding for schools (looking at you Iowa city and Des Moines who dared to defy Covid Kimmy), even less for support programs like medicaid.

Another steal from those unable to protect themselves so that the superrich can get a tax cut.

Of course the added benefits of defunding educational spending is that Iowa will become more and more like Mississippi, a rethuglican wet dream.
