Related: About this forumDid you guys see that Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, is Braindead's 2nd cousin?
In 1997, Braindead wrote Grassley for "support and assistance" in the confirmation of Merrick Garland for a U.S. Court of Appeals post:

TB's mother's birth name was Garland, so it must be his cousin on his mother's side.
It will be interesting to see what Chuckles and the other Rs do with this nomination.

(113,130 posts)I imagine a lot of people here on DU have family members on the dark side that nobody talks to.
I don't know what Garland's history on the bench has been like, but that's how I'll evaluate him, not because a second cousin is a wingnut governor who's so bad most of his constituents have been calling him Gov. Braindead.

(5,764 posts)That tell you anything about him? We're letting the GOP pick our Supreme Court nominees now. And it's only going to get worse the way things are going if something doesn't change fast.

That tells me only that they're looking for smart people.
Brooklynite has posted the guy's actual history. He's smart, a magna from Harvard Law. He's had his appointment to the district court stalled by wingnuts, so he has little affection for the far right. Perhaps you need to read actual history rather than trying to accuse him of guilt by association, something that could invite unwanted scrutiny of your own friends and family.
I don't have any illusions about his being a raving leftist. There is no way a leftist judge would ever be confirmed by this senate.

(21,046 posts)"Braindead" could apply to lots of politicians. I had no idea who OP was referring to.

(1,760 posts)and my post was mainly about the Iowa connection, though also about the nominee's conservative bonafides. A reply to the Facebook status containing the letter to Grassley, stated that Grassley voted against Garland in the 90's, despite TB's asking for consideration. It will be interesting to see if that happens gain.

(50,747 posts)I wonder what Chuckles reaction will be this time. I doubt he remembers anything from 1997.
