Went and saw the Niña and Pinta yesterday

The replicas of the Niña and Pinta built by Brazilian shipbuilders are up in Dubuque this week. I got it in my head that they were going to leave yesterday so I went and seen the two ships. (They're here until next Sunday). Here's a few pictures I took.

Debuque seems like an odd setting, though, but fortunate for you!

2. It's actually the second visit

They also visited in 2013 and the Captain in charge of the voyage was so impressed by the new facilities in Dubuque that he said they'd come back in 2016.

After they leave here their next stop is Winona, Minnesota.

4. The replicas might not be too bad...

...if the weather was good. The lower deck is climate controlled and has many modern conveniences. (They don't have that open because they have the bunks down there and the like).

But the originals, yeah I don't think I'd want to spend two months on them to cross the ocean.

5. This picture gives you a good idea of just how small these ships were....

That is someone standing on the deck. Could you imagine what it must have been like with a full crew of 26 on board.

6. Yeah I sure as heck wouldn't want to ride one of those across the ocean.

They had to spend all their time up on deck and slept up there. The lower deck was used to store livestock and other food items plus their other supplies. Probably couldn't really move too much without bumping in to someone else.
