Weaver highlights minimum wage, debt, Medicare in Soapbox speech (Steve King's opponent)

Democratic candidate for Congress Kim Weaver said Saturday that she will work to expand Social Security, address the student loan crisis and support a minimum wage increase.

Weaver is running against incumbent Republican Rep. Steve King in the state’s heavily conservative 4th District, which covers the northwest corner of the state. She spoke at The Des Moines Register Political Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair.

She works with the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocating for seniors in nursing homes and other residential care facilities. She also has worked as a Medicaid case manager and said those experiences have shaped her outlook on Social Security and Medicare. One of Weaver's primary goals is to expand Medicare so it covers the cost of long-term care, she said.

Another priority is to find a way to help students who are graduating from college with student loan debt.
