China is apparently no longer buying U.S. soybeans amid the rise in trade tensions, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
"Whatever they're buying is non-U.S.," Soren Schroder, CEO of New York-based Bunge, the world's largest oilseeds processor, told the news outlet in a phone interview. "They're buying beans in Canada, in Brazil, mostly Brazil, but very deliberately not buying anything from the U.S."
A Bunge representative did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.
China canceled a net 62,690 metric tons of U.S. soybean purchases in the two weeks ended April 19, the Bloomberg article pointed out, citing USDA data for the current marketing year.
This is potentially devastating to mid-western soy bean farmers and processors, who sold 13.9 billion dollars worth of the product to China in 2017.
Brazilian soy bean prices have gone up as a result of China buying there, and so the EU has increased their buying in the U.S. but their need for the crop is minuscule compared to Chinas.
Way to close that trade gap, drumpf.

And with the farm bill ripping price supports and price insurance programs, they are not going to be a very happy lot.

(14,657 posts)I read about some similar action going on. After the Shah of Iran was deposed, Iran had all these F-14 Tomcat fighters. The thing is a great aircraft but parts and maintenance intensive. Iran had a embargo so they just bought the parts on the black market. Paid a bit more but at least they got them..
The same could be done with soybeans or anything else they need but are "tariffed".
Think North Korea getting stuff....

(6,017 posts)And you have branches in both the USA and China.
China stops buying from your American subsidiary, but not your Canadian one.
What are you going to do to move that product?
A: sell them through the Canadian subsidiary via a two step transfer.
Now, if you aren't that big and you only exist in the USA, what are you going to do?
A: Sell them to a Canadian company which then sells to China.

(63,198 posts)and I fear this may be a rerun. That to say that they didn't exactly learn from that one. IIRC that one was fomented by another Republican.
And those groups never stopped voting Republican. Besides, recent research seems to indicate that Trump voters are more driven by race than economics. Amazing, isn't it? They would vote against their own interests because of fear of something that doesn't exist.
But maybe you are right. I sure hope you are.

(1,728 posts)Most certainly, a good share is warranted. We are Democrats, and clearly see a problem here. Like, DUH. Right?
But is our party extinct? What the hell is our party's position and response to this? I'm frustrated that we seem to have NOBODY who can get out in front and speak to these matters. Not a fucking peep. RADIO SILENCE.
This is a situation that MAKES ads for our side. But crickets.
