Mark Cady, chief justice of Iowa's Supreme Court since 2011, died Friday, judicial branch officials confirmed. He was 66.
Tonight, the state lost a great man, husband, father, grandfather, and jurist," Cady's family wrote in a Friday evening news release from the Judicial Branch. "Chief Justice Mark Cady passed away unexpectedly this evening from a heart attack. Arrangements are pending."
He wrote the unanimous opinion for the court in 2009 that made Iowa the third state to permit same-sex marriages.
Michael Gartner, the Iowa Cubs owner and former Des Moines Register editor who often writes about the court for Cityview, said Cady was a neighbor and a friend he saw several times a week.
