Girl accused of setting fire that caused about $1 million in damage to school

A juvenile girl has been charged with arson after an elementary school sustained severe fire damage in Monroe County.

State police said the fire at Gamaliel Elementary School was reported at about 1:30 p.m. Friday. Five school employees were inside but were able to escape without injury.

State police said “architects estimate that the school received upward of $1,000,000 in structure damage.”

State police said the girl was released to her parents after being charged with third-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. More charges are expected.
