Gov. Edwards' approval rating rises after 9 months filled with budget crunch, tragedy

After nine months on the job, Louisiana voters hold a favorable opinion of the job that Gov. John Bel Edwards has been doing, a new poll shows.

The poll, conducted by Southern Media & Opinion Research, found Edwards with a comfortable 62.8 percent approval rating, while 33.6 rated him unfavorably and 3.5 percent said they were not sure.

The poll was conducted Monday through Wednesday and included 500 likely voters. The margin of error is 4.4 percentage points.

The high marks for Edwards come after the state Legislature met for 19 consecutive weeks, including two special sessions he called to address the state budget that ended with an increase in the state sales tax. During Edwards' tenure, the state has also dealt with massive flooding across many parishes, the shooting of a man by Baton Rouge Police that sparked protests, and a deadly attack on law enforcement officers at a gas station. Edwards has taken a visible role in the response to each.
