"On universal background checks we found 91% of gun owners and 97% of non-gun owners were for background checks on all gun sales. NEJM found the same spread but lower percentages in their national sample: 84% of gun owners were for as were 90% of non-gun owners. Both are startling and impressive statistics. Our findings support this and other surveys that have found widespread support for universal background checks.
While gun owning fair goers were more supportive of banning assault weapons, 59%, than against, 41%, the spread was larger than the national survey. "

(14,449 posts)I would think (there I go again) that they would have quite a few hunters up there. This is rather encouraging.
Quit frankly, I am for 2nd Amendment, but really never understood the fight against background checks. It seems reasonable to me. Really need an assault weapon really? Now have as many shotguns and pistols you want, but get them registered. Never understood the fight over that either. None of these common sense requirements goes against the 2nd Amendment in my opinion.

(14,449 posts)I never owned a weapon of any type, but would not force anyone not to make a choice to have one as long as they had a few requirements met.

(18,318 posts)Right now, the atmosphere surrounding gun control is more toxic than the Jovian atmosphere, and with pro-2A forces in such dominance, a measure like UBCs will not stand a chance at the national level for some time, though states may take actions.
I favor an encrypted code on an official state I.D. which would reflect a legal buyer, based on b.g. checks used by the present NICS system. Of course, a state citizen may opt out of the I.D./ b.g. procedure, but that person would then have to go through NICS when purchasing a gun.
The problem is making the UBC as widespread as possible without enacting a government registration scheme, the mother of all non-starters, politically.

(10,136 posts)Almost everyone agrees that UBC is a good idea.
The problem is that all of the recent proposals for legislation have been so flawed that we are better off without these bad implementations.
