Paid Time-Off Bill Awaits Action From Governor

AUGUSTA, Maine - A bill to provide paid time off to 139,000 newly eligible workers in Maine is awaiting a decision from the Democratic governor.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 10 states have paid sick leave. But Senate Democrats say Maine's bill is unique because it allows paid time for other emergencies.

The Senate sent Gov. Janet Mills the bill Thursday.

Business groups criticized the original bill, which required employers with over five employees to allow them to use at least 40 hours of earned sick leave annually.
