Ellsworth to have cannabis question on referendum ballot

ELLSWORTH — Voters will be asked if they wish to allow adult use cannabis stores in Ellsworth when they receive their election ballots come November.

The question will read: “Shall the City of Ellsworth vote to authorize within the municipality the operation of adult use cannabis stores provided they operate in compliance of all applicable state and local requirements?”

If voters approve the referendum, a city ordinance would be drafted by the Planning Board and brought to the City Council for the final vote.

How many stores the city would allow and where they might be located in the city limits would be discussed during the drafting of the ordinance. The Planning Board, for example, might allow adult use cannabis stores to open in urban and commercial areas, but might not allow them in neighborhood or rural zones.
