Disgraced ex-FBI agent John 'Zip' Connolly dying, up for prison release

Notorious ex-FBI agent John “Zip” Connolly is said to be dying and is up for a medical release in Florida next week that will be streamed live, the Herald has learned.

Connolly was sentenced to 40 years in jail for his double-dealing relationship with James “Whitey” Bulger during the mobster’s murderous reign in South Boston. Bulger was beaten to death in a West Virginia prison in 2018 and now Connolly wants to die at home.

Florida officials told the Herald on Friday that Connolly is “terminally ill or medically incapacitated” and has been approved for a hearing on a “conditional medical release” on Wednesday. That hearing will be open to the public via video on the Florida Commission on Offender Review website at 10 a.m. that day.

“It’s on the docket for the 17th and he’s seeking a conditional medical release,” said commission spokeswoman Angela Meredith, who added a 2-1 vote is all that’s required under Florida law to set Connolly free.
