Tornado sweeps through Livonia (MI), killing 2-year-old

A 2-year-old was killed Wednesday when a tornado swept through Livonia and toppled a tree that landed on the family's house.

His mother and 2-month-old sibling were hospitalized after a tornado rapidly tore through the city, the National Weather Service said.

"We were informed by the Livonia Emergency Management that a 2-year-old child was killed, and his mother and a 2-month-old infant were injured," said Steve Considine, a meteorologist with the weather service in White Lake Township. "This was due to a tree that fell on their home."

Livonia residents reported there were no warning sirens sounding ahead of or during the storm. The weather service said it didn't issue a warning, saying the tornado developed rapidly and did not allow the agency time to alert residents.

Really a weird weather ewvent to have a mild rain storm strengthen enough seemingly instantly, to produce as small tornado. Sounds like it was an EF1 that only lasted a short time.

The alarm bells are going off for me in Michigan right now. There is a lot of wind now on the regular. We have wind storms several times a year now that are strong enough o bring down large limbs on trees. We used to only get those types of wind storms every few years. There have been several tordadic events in the last 12 months that are not normal. Late last Smmer 1 storm produced like 15 or 16 tornados, 1 of which was a deadly strong F2, almost F3. Then this Spring the Portage area got hammered by a strong F2 followed immediately by a 2nd tornado an hour later along almost the same exact path.

This is not normal for Michigan.
