Genesee County voters asked to approve funding for senior services, MTA and 911

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Voters across the county are being asked to approve three millages and surcharges that they have supported in the past in the Aug. 6 primary election.

The funding requests include a proposed $3 per-line telephone surcharge to support the county 911 system, renewal of 0.68-mill property tax for senior citizen services, and the reauthorization of a 1.2-mill property tax for the Mass Transporation Authority to support Your Ride services.

The county Board of Commissioners voted in May to add the 911 surcharge to the primary ballot, asking to increase the rate from $1.86 per line to $3, the maximum allowed by state law.

Commissioners have said they expect the higher fee, if approved by voters, will make a significant dent in the cost of communication equipment used by firefighters and police officers in the county as well as maintaining funding for the county 9-1-1 Dispatch Authority.
