Council President Mary Sheffield launches campaign to be Detroit's first female mayor
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield on Tuesday formally kicked off her campaign for mayor in what is shaping up to be a competitive race for the November 2025 election.
Sheffield, 37, a fourth generation Detroiter from a family of civil rights advocates, would be the first Black woman to be mayor of Detroit if she's elected to the city's top post. Sheffield launched her campaign Tuesday night before a jam-packed crowd at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 58 in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood.
"While serving on the council for 11 years, we have truly built a legacy of working together," Sheffield said.
Sheffield praised accomplishments during the three terms of Mayor Mike Duggan, who was elected mayor in 2013 while the city was under state-controlled emergency management and in the depths of the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
