Detroit Councilman Fred Durhal launches mayoral bid
Detroit — Detroit City Councilman Fred Durhal III formally launched his campaign to succeed Mayor Mike Duggan Wednesday night.
Durhal, 40, is serving his first term as a Detroit City Council member representing District Seven and chairs the city's budget and finance committee. A former state lawmaker, he served in the state House for two terms and was minority vice chair of the appropriations committee, before working as a community liaison at the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
“We would all agree that the city of Detroit has come a very very long way,” said Durhal in front of a crowd of at least 100 people at the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan on the city's west side. “But many of us know as we live here this city has a very long way to go."
Durhal said the leadership to move the city forward "has to be visionary."
