Whitmer approves new track and nickname from local rapper: 'Big Gretch says stay home and stay safe'

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) gave her stamp of approval to a local rapper from Detroit over the weekend after he released a new song dedicated to her called “Big Gretch.”

The rapper, Gmac Cash, released the track on YouTube on Friday. Over the past several days, the song has amassed more than 138,000 views on the streaming site.

In the song, the artist raps about his governor’s response to the novel coronavirus outbreak in his state, including the stay-at-home order she recently extended through mid-May in an effort to curb the spread of the disease.

Local artists Payroll Giovanni, HBK, Quis, and Chaz Bling are just a few of Hutch's Jewelry's impressive list of well-known clients from around the Detroit area.

And the jeweler added Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to that list this week, supplying her with a pair of Cartier C Décor marbled white Buffalo horn sunglasses valued at over $2,500. In Detroit, the popular frames are affectionately referred to as "Buffs" or "white sticks" and earning them is a high honor among residents.

"Detroit is the Cartier capital," said Darrel Hasty, salesperson and brand ambassador for Hutch's Jewelry. "So for Detroiters to be loving Gretchen the way they are, I think it's only right that she receives a pair of Buffs."

Gov. Whitmer did not purchase the white Buffs herself. They were gifted to her through a GoFundMe account setup by self-proclaimed "King of Comedy Parody Rap" Gmac Cash. After releasing a song Saturday titled "Big Gretch," which praised Gov. Whitmer's response to the novel coronavirus and defended her against her critics and protesters of her policies, he decided to launch a campaign to officially give the governor her Buffs.
