MEDINA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man likely drowned after he and three others fell through ice while checking a lake for fishing, authorities said.

Damion Moog's body was recovered Saturday at Durfee Lake in Lenawee County's Medina Township, the sheriff's department said.

Four people were checking the thickness of the lake ice Friday night with a plan to return and fish Saturday. They all fell in; three survived.

Moog, 22, lived in Hudson.

it is a good idea to consider what might happen if the thing being tested fails.

He did great fishing first ice and last ice. He had a small, 8 ft duck boat he would push from behind, filled with equipment. He could jump into the boat when the ice gave way.

Have always been amazed what risks ice fisherman would take. Years ago I worked third shift with a bunch of dedicated Ice fisherman. Standing in line to clock out one of them was kind of doing a mental checklist to see if they were prepared. Part of that was asking another guy if he brought a ladder. This was puzzling so i asked the obvious question. They looked at me like I had two heads, then said well the ice near shore is melted we use the ladder to lay down on shore and bridge the gap to good ice.
