Election worker in Kent County faces charges for illegal activity in August 2022

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker authorized charges against an election worker who was seen inserting a USB into a computer that contains confidential information.

James Donald Holkeboer was charged with falsifying records, a felony punishable by up to five year, and using a computer to commit a crime, felony punishable by four years and/or $5,000, according to the prosecutor.

When the polls closed on Aug. 18, Holkeboer was accused of inserting a USB into the electronic poll book, a computer that contains voter registration data, including personal identifying information, Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons said.

The computer is not connected to any tabulation equipment, nor the internet, and the incident did not impact the results of the election, according to Lyons.
