The Minneapolis police officer earning the most overtime cash so far this year was fired in 2007 for several violations of MPD policy, including manipulating his timecard to get overtime pay.
Minneapolis Police Lt. Robert Berry was also disciplined for reporting for work in 2004 and then taking comp time to go bar hopping with another cop and failing to report that the other officer got drunk and drove a squad car into a picnic table outside a bar.
Berry got his job back after an arbitrator disagreed with the police chief and ruled that he wasnt on duty while bar hopping.
As of late August this year, Berry had made $164,700 in overtime more than his annual salary of nearly $131,000. The 31-year MPD veteran is No. 1 on a list of 650 MPD employees (including civilian workers) whove worked overtime as of Aug. 25, according to data the Reformer received through a public records request.
As of late August, MPD had already paid $14.4 million in overtime exceeding the $10 million the city budgeted for overtime this year and eclipsing overtime totals spent each of the past four years.
