See what $310 million can buy when renovated State Capitol reopens

Minnesotans will get their first look at what $310 million has bought them as the newly renovated State Capitol opens on Tuesday.

The St. Paul landmark on the edge of downtown has been effectively closed to the public since June 2015, while crews completed the bulk of a massive restoration project begun in 2013.

“I think people’s jaws will hit the ground,” said Rep. Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, a professional architect who serves on the Capitol Preservation Commission. “I knew it was going to look really good when it was completed, but it exceeded my expectations.”

It’s the building’s most extensive renovation since it opened in 1905. Minor work will continue through spring and summer before a grand opening celebration in August.
