A lawsuit filed Friday seeks to oust Lt. Gov. Michelle Fischbach (R) from her state Senate seat.
The lawsuit, filed in Ramsey County District Court by a Democrat from Fischbachs Senate district, is the logical next stage of an ongoing disagreement between some Republicans and Democrats stemming from the resignation of U.S. Sen. Al Franken amid allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior.
Fischbach became lieutenant governor after Tina Smith resigned to replace Franken. Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Smith.
Fischbach became lieutenant governor because she was the president of the state Senate.

(222,165 posts)A Republican on the board of supervisors decided to drop out, but it was too late to remove his name from the ballot. So he was persuaded to continue in the race and since he was expected to win, another Republican could be appointed to take his place. But that really backfired when the truth came to light. Democrats won all but one seat and now have a majority for the first time. Republicans are feeling the Trump backlash and are trying anything to hold onto their seats. They're going to be even more desperate come the 2018 midterms.

(222,165 posts)I drive a lot locally and saw exactly 2 Trump bumper stickers in my travels. There was a lot of support for Bernie Sanders since we're pretty close to Vermont, but I tend to ask people I know well enough if they vote and I don't know one single person who admits to voting for Trump. And not only did the town board gain a Democratic majority for the first time, the closest city elected a Democratic mayor. And that was only in the November election, I'm expecting a greater backlash come next fall!
And our Republican congresswoman is up for election in November, too. She's got ties to Paul Ryan and has already become extremely unpopular. There have already been numerous protests and she's taken to only releasing her schedule after-the-fact because protesters show up. Last I knew, 7 Democrats have entered the race to oppose her in November - and one Republican challenger in the primary. I remember the days when the Democrats didn't even bother to field a candidate, but this time around we have a surplus!
