Dakota County employee allegedly stole $270K from housing agency

A former Dakota County employee is accused of using his position with the Community Development Agency to steal more than $270,000 in housing funds.

Vangyee Leng Yang, 39, of Fridley has been charged in Dakota County District Court with five counts of felony theft by swindle in connection with the disappearance of the funds from April 2016 through May 2018.

A warrant has been issued for Yang’s arrest.

Yang worked as a software systems coordinator at the agency from May 19, 2014, until June 26, 2018, when he was fired.

“It is extremely disturbing any time the theft of public funds intended for those in need occurs,” Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom said in a statement Friday. “This is a major economic crime for which we intend to seek an aggravated sentence under Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines if a conviction is obtained.”
