MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Local planners say Minneapolis is the first city of its size in the country to ban new drive-through windows.
The City Council voted Thursday to ban the construction of new drive-through windows. Existing ones are grandfathered in.
Council President Lisa Bender proposed the ban last year to cut down on vehicle noise, idling and traffic and to make sidewalks safer for pedestrians.
New drive-through windows have already been prohibited in 17 of the citys 23 zoning districts. The Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan approved by the council last year directs the city to outlaw new drive-through facilities and gas stations.

(26,729 posts)Is there a rationale for this? Have lots of terrorist incidents occurred at drive-through windows? Are they otherwise bad for public safety? Really?
This is another example of the bullshit from 9/11.
Okay, I do realize that the rationale is "to cut down on vehicle noise, idling and traffic and to make sidewalks safer for pedestrians." But is that honestly a strong enough reason?
Says the woman who almost never uses a drive through of any kind.

(116,829 posts)I wonder if the city council will reconsider if they see a rise in late night crime at fast food restaurants because they will have to keep the main dining facilities open?

https://kstp.com/business/minneapolis-city-council-approves-new-drive-thru-ban/5451506/?cat=12196Dan Klassen wrote city council members in July when the ordinance was first introduced. He suffers from Parkinson's disease and uses his local pharmacy drive-thru multiple times each month.
"It's a lot easier, especially in the wintertime," Klassen said during an interview. "Without [drive-thrus], it would make it a lot more difficult."
It was a unaminous 12-0 vote by the City Council. Sigh.
Edited: changed "15-0 vote" to "12-0 vote"

(2,383 posts)Then I read the comments. I still think its a great idea. Im originally from Minnesota and now live in the U.K.
Ive been around a few cities in the U.K. and in Europe. We have our fair share of fast food places and yes we do have them with drive thrus. Weve had equally horrible weather like Minnesota has (see Beast from the East).
Every single European city Ive been in have fast food places with no drive thrus. Before you say something like, thats not true! Ive been in so and so city and Ive seen drive throughs. Theyre usually on the outskirts of cities at smallish retail areas (and Ive lived near Nottingham, Loughborough, Durham, Newcastle upon Tyne, and others). Even the service areas on major motorways here in the U.K. dont have drive throughs.
For example, The town centre in Loughborough is now pedestrianised so there is no need for drive thrus. And on the outskirts of the city, near a super Tesco, is a McDonalds with a drive thru. Im sure on the outskirts of Minneapolis have Fast food place with drive thrus and they even let the existing ones stay open.
I can see by they did it and with good intentions.

(28,246 posts)Not good for me 'cause I've this thing about having to do my makeup, hair, and having clean, stain-free, (& dog hair-free ) clothes on, etc. before going IN anywhere. (Yes, I'm nuts.)
Otherwise, I have to send hubby in to pick up takeout. (I must drive because his eyesight is now so bad.)
