Mississippi mayor flouts calls to resign over George Floyd comments

PETAL, Miss. — A Mississippi mayor is dealing with fallout from a social media post he made about the death of a black man in police custody.

The Petal Board of Aldermen called a special meeting Thursday night, where they condemned comments made by Petal Mayor Hal Marx and called on him to resign. In a tweet this week, Marx offered his opinion on the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Floyd died after a white officer was seen on camera kneeling on his neck.

Marx said he didn't see anything unreasonable and claimed Floyd likely died of an overdose or heart attack. Critics are calling Marx racist. At Thursday's meeting, the mayor claimed his comment was misinterpreted. He refused to resign.
