It is no secret that the City of Jackson under the Lumumba Administration is no fan of gun shows. Last summer, city leaders looked for ways to ban the gatherings. This past weekend, it would seem that there was intent by the city to impose a disincentive on the shows and their vendors by charging, for the first time ever, a fire inspection fee for each vendor booth at these events.
According to Jackson Jambalaya, the Jackson Fire Department surprised vendors at the gun show this weekend as it opened, telling vendors they had to pay a $50 fire inspection fee for each booth inside the facility on top of the $75 booth fee from the organizers.
The Fire Departments message was delivered while being accompanied by the Jackson Police Department.
David Chancellor of Laurel operates the semi-annual gun show. Chancellor told Jackson Jambalaya that City of Jackson Fire Marshal Elliot Holmes notified the Wahabi Shrine Temple on Thursday that each vendor would have to pay the fee.

(60,952 posts)The mayor cannot designate two groups of people, people he does like and and people he doesn't like, and use the law to treat them in different manners.
And that's what this is, pure and simple, the mayor using the fire department to carry out a vendetta against people he doesn't like.

(418 posts)It wouldn't make sense to charge every single vendor at every convention that fee. I sold plush for years at conventions. Do you think they're going to explode, or harm anyone in any way?

(4,651 posts)If some one wanted to push it, instead of finding a venue just out of town, the vendors and show might have a case. It has been shown that jurisdictions can't charge more than a reasonable amount for services. This was done based on photo copying charges jurisdictions levied on people getting documents. Cities were force to charge only the true costs. I think it would be hard to justify 50 vendors with booths costing $3,750 for fire inspections.
Not a fan of gun shows. It may be true that the codes allow charges for inspections but there are limits to charges that are punitive.

(60,952 posts)Pride Week parade, but all participants, on the grounds that, well, you know how the gays are with all those diseases. So everyone has to get a nasal swab, and there will be a fee for that.
Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.
And I don't care for the surprise element of the "inspection" fee," which is in truth an "I don't like you" tax either.
