Legislative panels looking at taxes, spending begin work
JACKSON – House Speaker Philip Gunn said Monday he “would like to see an overall reduction in taxes” as result of legislative working groups formed to study and make recommendations on how the state spends and collects revenue.
Gunn, R-Clinton, made his comments Monday at the state Capitol at the initial meetings of the working groups formed by him and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, who presides over the Senate.
The two legislative presiding officers have formed 10 working groups that will be composed of House and Senate members and a representative of Gov. Phil Bryant’s office. The groups will make recommendations to the Legislature as early as for the 2017 session, but no deadline was placed on how long they can work.
While the Legislature has cut taxes between 40 and 50 times since Gunn and Reeves assumed their current posts in 2012, the pair said an overall study of the state’s tax structure is needed.
