Suspicious package at federal courthouse in Hattiesburg under investigation

Several blocks of downtown Hattiesburg were shut down Friday morning after a suspicious package was found inside the William M. Colmer Federal Courthouse.

Hattiesburg police and fire departments assisted state and federal agencies as they conducted their investigation.

HPD spokesman Lt. Jon Traxler said the department responded to the call of an alleged bomb threat from U.S. Marshals around 10 a.m. Police officers and firefighters helped clear an area a few blocks wide around the courthouse and put up crime scene tape around the perimeter.

"They advised they had a situation and needed us to assist with blocking off the building," he said.
