Sentencings delayed for 9 guilty in $400 million pain cream fraud

Nine of the 13 people convicted in a $400 million compounded pain cream fraud will not be sent to prison any time soon.

The defendants, who pleaded guilty to their roles in the fraud, were scheduled to be sentenced July 2. The new sentencing dates are set for Oct. 30-31.

The scheme, which bilked TRICARE and other health benefit providers of nearly half a billion dollars over the course of 18 months, involved several pharmacies across the country that were filling prescriptions for compounded pain creams and vitamin pills, many of which cost more than $10,000 apiece and included ketamine, a controlled substance.

While the compounded medicines are meant to be formulated for individuals, these were prescribed in masses, sometimes by photocopied forms and set on auto-refill, to maximize profit.
