Federal lawsuit filed over fatal explosion in 2014 at recycling plant in Granite City

EAST ST. LOUIS • The estate of an Edwardsville man killed in a Grainte City recycling plant by the explosion of one or more mortar shells sued his employer, the U.S. government and the company that hauled the material to the plant.

The suit was filed Friday by the estate of Tyler Muenstermann, who was killed on Aug. 24, 2014, at Totall Metal Recycling Inc., at 2700 Missouri Avenue. He was 24.

The suit names the U.S., Totall and DaRan Inc.

Granite City Police Chief Rich Miller said at the time of the blast that the mortar was in a large, open-top, wooden container along with other mortar shells and similar material when it exploded. The container was located outdoors.
