Veto session: Missouri House acts to put in place a photo ID mandate for voters

The Missouri House has voted 115-41 to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill that puts in place a photo ID mandate for voters who go to the polls.

The state Senate is expected to make its override attempt shortly.

The bill – which is estimated to cost the state $17 million a year – would go into place only if Missouri voters in November approve a proposed constitutional amendment to allow the state to require voters to show a photo ID at the polls. The state Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that the state constitution currently bars such a mandate.

The annual cost pertains to state help for people who do not have the documents, such as a birth certificate or marriage license, required to verify their identity so that they can obtain a government-issued ID.

1. More repube racism!

Obviously a repube attempt to suppress the vote of minorities. Undocumented people may be reluctant to try and get photo IDs and considering how black people are treated by the police, who can blame them from avoiding places like the Motor Vehicles Dept.

2. Well....

American CITIZENS should be allowed to vote in American elections. If you are not a citizen, you should not be able to vote and thereby influence policy/conditions in this country. Likewise having some form of proof of citizenship ensures your right to do so.

We do not vote in the elections of other countries, nor should their citizens vote in ours.

4. Please cite the glaring examples of voter irregularity

it is statistically insignificant in our elections. In Missouri you are issued a voter ID by your county election board. It is not a photo ID, but is currently valid to vote, you must register in order to get one of these mailed to you by your county election board. To obtain a Driver's License or photo ID in Missouri you must present an Embossed Birth Certificate at the License Bureau, in order to get a copy of your Birth Certificate you must present a valid Driver's License or similar ID (note any circular logic there?).

Elderly who have given up driving will have an issue voting as will other groups who cannot obtain the necessary documents. Citizenship is not the issue... Poll Tax is.

3. It's not just the undocumented underclass who are disenfranchised

If they are here, working, paying taxes and living under our rules shouldn't they have a voice in those rules?

Also, these proof laws disenfranchise alot of eligible citizens, not just our undocumented slave class! Should those who are too afraid of being shot by police, to go the the MVD for thier 'papers', not be allowed a voice?

After all, aren't voter ID laws Republican positions. My party would like everyone to have a voice, even minorities!
