Operator of closed pizza restaurant in Joplin accused of tax evasion
The owner of a now-closed pizza restaurant in Northpark Mall has been charged by the Jasper County prosecutor with 14 counts of tax evasion.
Maaria Nyazee's arraignment has been set for July 19 in Jasper County Circuit Court. According to a probable-cause statement filed by Department of Revenue investigator Daniel Smithson, the sales tax license for RedBrick Pizza Kitchen Cafe was revoked on Dec. 9, 2016, and Nyazee notified the state the restaurant had closed in March of this year.
Nyazee, who is listed as having an address in Champaign, Illinois, paid sales taxes to the Department of Revenue for the first three months RedBrick Pizza was open in Joplin, but stopped in November 2015, Smithson's affidavit states. In addition, Smithson's report says he discovered that Nyazee repeatedly transferred money from a business checking account for RedBrick Pizza, on which she was the only signer, into a personal account she controlled. Nyazee also withdrew cash from the business account, according to the report.
Nyazee did not respond to an email message sent to an address listed on the organization forms for Red Brick Pizza filed with the Missouri Secretary of State.
