Missouri auditor urges Parson administration to take responsibility for tax confusion
Missouri's Department of Revenue changed its income tax withholding tables three times in the last 13 months, State Auditor Nicole Galloway reported Tuesday and the last change, in January 2019, resulted in the state taking too much money from paychecks.
And, Galloway said, that change was made without notice either to the public or to lawmakers, violating a state law.
The initial withholding changes in March 2018 were prompted by changes in the federal tax law passed by Congress in 2017, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2018.
But, Galloway said Tuesday, because of the changes in March and October 2018, "it is now estimated that taxpayers will be paying an additional $134 million when they file their returns," as opposed to getting refunds they might normally have expected.
