Wally Kennedy: Joplin needs a full-service supermarket

Frequent readers of this column know that I visit family near Boulder, Colorado, at this time of year. Boulder, as you might know, has been named the happiest city in America. Every time I go there, I am struck by the vibrancy of the city. It is a happy place.

But I have never been envious until now. Boulder has something that Joplin used to have — a full-service supermarket. This is a supermarket with a bakery, a delicatessen, a seafood department, a floral department, dine-in and carryout food service, wine and spirits, a pharmacy and a coffee kiosk.

While in Boulder, I visited a Safeway supermarket. I picked up a handheld basket because I did not think I would be buying that much. Just a few things, the basics. When I walked into the produce department, I stopped to look around. This prompted a store employee to walk up and ask me: “Can I help you find something?”

“No,” I said. “I’m just marveling.”

1. I do the same marveling when I visit all the great supermarkets in

Bloomington, IL. We are basically stuck with every variation of Walmart and a single mid-sized grocery.

2. We just had a new ShopRite open, even though we didn't need it. but, it's where I do most...

of my shopping because the selection is great, prices are better, and there is that nook with the tables and chairs for the salad bars, hot soup tureens, and hot food buffets.

There's a Stop&Shop across the street and a WalMart down the road, but they just don't cut it. BJ's and Costco are in town, but they don't have the selection or the ambiance.

What? You don't want ambiance with your food shopping?

3. There are full-service supermarkets in my locale

but I still marvel at a chain located to the east: Wegmans. I have actually rearranged my schedule so I could visit one of their stores.

4. I'd love to have a Wegmans in the Denver area.

Was in one near DC in Virginia. I was amazed at all it had to offer, especially the food court.

I used to cover all of western/upstate NY and New England for work. I would go to Wegman's all the time while traveling. Not particularly inexpensive, but a broad offering and the ready made food section(s) was fantastic.

I'd settle for a Whole Foods in Parker. We've got nothing. Old Kingsoopers and a run down Safeway and that's it.
