Committees release new congressional district map
NEW BLOOMFIELD Special committees from the Missouri House and Senate Thursday released a proposed map of congressional districts based on data from the 2020 census.
Missouri has eight congressional districts after losing one in 2013 as a result of changing population trends. The Republican-controlled legislature has control over drawing the lines for congressional districts; special bipartisan citizens' commissions draw state legislative boundaries.
According to the House Communications office, "the proposed congressional map balances several required criteria including compliance with the Missouri and U.S. Constitutions as well as the Voting Rights Act." The required criteria include compactness, contiguousness, and equal populations.
This is a fair and constitutional map with common-sense boundaries that everyday Missourians can recognize, said Senator Mike Bernskoetter, R-Jefferson City, chair of the Senate Select Committee on Redistricting.
