University starts audit, criminal investigation over mismanagement

NEW BLOOMFIELD — The University of Missouri is initiating an internal audit and a criminal investigation by the MU Police Department has begun over alleged mismanagement of funds, according to a press release.

A staff member in the College of Engineering has been fired as well, according to the release.

Spokesman Christian Basi says a tip was reported last week to the University Office of Ethics, Compliance, and Audit Services. After a preliminary investigation, Brandon Guffey, director of financial services for the College, was fired.

Basi says as the investigation and audit continue, some people with access to sensitive information may be placed on administrative leave to ensure the investigation is not compromised. One person has already been placed on leave.
