Missouri Autism Centers seek increased funds to decrease wait times

COLUMBIA — During Governor Mike Parson's State of the State Address, the governor proposed doubling the funding for the state's autism centers.

The Thompson Center in Columbia is the largest of the six autism centers, and it is the only one in Central Missouri.

“I think there’s not enough funding, and there are not enough specialists," said Psychologist Connie Brooks who works at the center.

Missouri Autism Centers want to increase their yearly funding from $4.4 million to $8.7 million. Dr. Brooks said doubling the funds would allow them to almost double the number of evaluations at each center.
