Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper promoted after displaying discriminatory behavior
Special investigation documents show former Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Zachary Czerniewski displayed previous examples of discriminatory behavior, was counseled for it, and still promoted from Corporal to Master Sergeant.
The documents state on Aug. 6, 2020, the then-Corporal Czerniewski received a counseling report due to a disproportionate number of traffic stops against Black drivers. On Jul. 1, 2021, less than one-year later, he was promoted to Master Sergeant.
Right after his promotion, between August and December 2021, Czerniewski falsified 10 reports. In seven of those reports, he conducted a vehicle search on a black man and listed no search was conducted. The other three incidents, Czerniewski stopped a black man and listed his race as white in the traffic reports.
