'Extreme' Glacier Park fire claims structures near Lake McDonald

A fire sparked by lightning Saturday blew up Sunday in Glacier National Park forcing the evacuation of dozens of visitors and destroying structures in the Lake McDonald area on the park's western side.

"We just see the whole side of the mountain on fire," said Taylor Creasey, 20, of Whitefish who arrived at Lake McDonald Lodge boat ramp just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

Fire managers confirmed Monday that structures on the north end of Lake McDonald were lost as the blaze quickly grew prompting very rapid evacuations.

Details were not available about the number or type of structures that burned in the fire, the Park Service said in a news release issued at 10:30 a.m.
