20,000 people sign petition to get fired Butte Central teacher rehired

10 hours ago • By Kelley Christensen

More than 20,000 people have signed a petition supporting fired Butte Central Elementary teacher Shaela Evenson.
....

Evenson was fired from her job as a middle school literature and physical education teacher Jan. 10 after the diocese received an anonymous letter about her pregnancy out of wedlock. She had taught at the school for about nine years. ... School and diocese leaders have said they had no choice but to fire Evenson because her pregnancy was in conflict with church teachings about marriage. Calls about the petition to Patrick Haggarty, the superintendent of diocese schools, were not returned Tuesday.
....

Diocese leaders drew fire again earlier this month when a Billings Central Catholic Schools softball coach said she wasn’t welcomed back to the team for this season because she’d worked at Planned Parenthood, a group whose philosophies on birth control clash with the Catholic Church.

Evenson has not granted interviews since news of her firing broke. She has hired an Ohio-based lawyer who specializes in wrongful-termination suits.
