Plastic ban won't be on Missoula's November ballot

MISSOULA, Mont. — A single-use plastic ban will not be coming to Missoula ballots later this year, and organizers cite last month's severe windstorm as the main reason.

The ballot initiative sought to ban plastic such as Styrofoam and plastic grocery bags. Under the proposal, straws and stirrers would have been available upon request.

“We knew that everything was going to have to work just right for us to get the goal of the required number of signatures, and then when (the windstorm) happened, we knew that it was just going to derail us, and we weren’t going to be able to make it,” Jeremy Drake, a co-organizer with Montana Plastic Free Missoula, said.

The result is disappointing, but there's a lot to celebrate, Drake told NBC Montana, pointing to the people and volunteers connected with the effort.
