Nebraska State Capitol undergoes noisy duct cleaning, possibly for first time in its history
LINCOLN — That loud, whining noise coming recently from the State Capitol isn’t some upset politician or lobbyist but a company cleaning the air ducts.
The noise, which has been compared to a stuck car horn or an air-raid siren, is being generated by huge vacuums mounted in two vans that are cleaning out the air ducts at the Capitol.
It may be the first time in the 85-year history of the historic high-rise Capitol that the ducts have been cleaned, according to Bob Ripley, the State Capitol administrator.
Decades of dirt, lint and other gunk are being removed from the air ducts, and a disinfectant applied, in preparation for the start of a $80 million to $85 million replacement of the heating and air conditioning systems in the 15-story structure.
