Prairieland striking a blow for independence in milk sales

FIRTH -- The management of Prairieland Dairy always has gone against the flow in the milk business.

As other big livestock operations turned to no trespassing signs and security cameras to keep people away, Prairieland's bosses began offering tours of the milking parlor to thousands of people annually in 1998.

When visiting, cow lovers from nearby Lincoln voiced regret about cutting off most of the cows' tails for sanitation reasons, the keepers of a milking herd that has grown to 1,200 stopped that practice and found other ways to meet the cleanliness standard.

-snip-

And now Prairieland is upping the ante again in its campaign to provide farm-direct milk to grocery stores in Lincoln, Omaha and the rest of a growing trade territory.
